Homework Philosophy

Our philosophy is to allow students and families to enjoy their time together after school and in the evenings and not have that time consumed by hours of homework. We also know how important it is for students to be able to enjoy the other areas of personal strengths and interests by participating in activities after school.

Homework is assigned daily in:
1st-5th Grades
  • their Orton-Gillingham PIE Class (Personalized Instruction and Enrichment) with daily oral reading homework with phonetically-controlled passages or independent reading short stories or novels that are signed daily by the adult they are reading to;
  • their small-group Math-U-See class and should be able to be completed independently - Math-U-See is a targeted math intervention class that meets the student at their skill level (this is not a grade-level standards-based class since they also receive another math class that is standards-based); and
  • occasional study for tests/quizzes in their grade-level standards-based content classes.
6th-8th Grades
  • their Orton-Gillingham PIE Class (Personalized Instruction and Enrichment) with daily oral reading homework with phonetically-controlled passages or independent reading short stories or novels that are signed daily by the adult they are reading to; and
  • some of their grade-level standards-based content classes with the amount of work and classes increasing by the grade and as the year progresses.
