Dyslexia Tidbit
Executive Functioning (EF) and Students with Dyslexia
During September, we will explore what Executive Functioning (EF) is and how to help students with dyslexia develop EF.
Located in the frontal lobes of the brain, executive functions (EF) typically begin to develop in early childhood as the prefrontal cortex develops, then continue through adolescence into young adulthood. Parallel to the gradual development of EF, parents, teachers, and others in a child’s environment gradually escalate their expectations for the child to exercise an increasing measure of self-management, ranging from the simple tasks of dressing and self-care to more complex responsibilities, e.g., managing multiple courses of study in high school or driving a motor vehicle.
A collage of cognitive activities, EF encompasses the ability to plan actions towards a goal, handle information flexibly, recognize the ramifications of behavior, and make reasonable inferences based on limited information. They are detailed functions: logic, strategy, planning, problem-solving, and reasoning. There is no planning for the future without good EF planning skills.
Impairment of any or all of these EF skills may be present in spite of strong intellectual skills and unaffected language capacity. They are characterized by the following skills:
- Difficulty with planning and organization
- Trouble identifying what needs to be done
- Problems determining the sequence of accomplishment
- Difficulty carrying out the steps in an orderly way
- Difficulty beginning tasks
- Problems maintaining attention
- Trouble evaluating how one is doing on a task
- Difficulty taking feedback or suggestions

We apologize in advance to anyone accidentally left off.

Pizza Fridays Update
Due to the overwhelming generosity of volunteers who have signed up to help with pizza pickup and serving students on Fridays, the school is committed to continuing this for students and parents, as long as we have the volunteers needed. We will revisit this in December to see whether we can continue weekly or need to scale back to once or twice a month.
The PTA will be reimbursing all families who paid in advance for the year. We will create an order in MySchoolBucks once we know whether there is a new LAB PTA board. We know that if you paid in advance, it might create hardship to prepay again before receiving your reimbursement. We will honor a one-week grace period for a carryover from one platform to the next, so if you prepaid for this coming Friday, your child will still receive their slice(s).
Spirit Rock
We know that some parents have already prepaid and booked the Spirit Rock for different dates this school year. We will create an order in MySchoolBucks once we know whether there is a new LAB PTA board.
A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
School Fees
School Fees are now available and can be paid by credit card through MySchoolBucks or with cash or check at the school.
Technology
Just a reminder: All students are required to bring earbuds or headphones to school every day. The school does not provide these.
School Excuses
Send all school excuses- parent and/or doctor - to: [email protected]. Do not email them to the teacher. You can also send in a paper copy. All absences must have an excuse, whether they saw a doctor or not. They must also be turned in within three days of the child returning to school.
A Note from the Reading Coach
Mrs. Jessica Hudson
Please join us for our Title I Open House on Thursday, September 17, from 3:30-5:00. This is a great afternoon to learn more about literacy, our curriculum, family engagement, and more!
A Note from the Testing Coordinator
Mrs. Wendye Henderson
Fall MAP scores will be sent home with the Quarter 1 Interim Reports.
A Note from the Yearbook Coordinator
Ms. Stephanie Phifer
Yearbooks are on sale now through Jostens.com. Yearbooks are currently $25, but will increase to $28 after September 4th. Order early and save!
