Dyslexia Tidbit
Dyslexia Summary
"Dyslexia is the most common learning disorder. It mainly affects reading, spelling, and writing. It is lifelong, but symptoms can vary in degree and change over time.
Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder. That means it’s caused by differences in how the brain develops and functions. It also runs in families, so it’s likely that genetics play a role.
There are no medications or proven therapies for dyslexia. But special instruction can help people with dyslexia improve their literacy skills.
The only way to know if a person has dyslexia is through an evaluation. Kids can get full evaluations for free at school. Adults need to be evaluated privately, which can be expensive.
There are real benefits to being diagnosed or identified with dyslexia. Kids might get special reading instruction at school. They might also get accommodations to keep their challenges from getting in the way of learning. Adults who disclose their disability to their employers might be able to get accommodations at work."

A Note from the Principal
Ms. Heidi Bishop
We are closely monitoring the tropical storms in the Atlantic. Should there be any impact to our area that affects school, please check our social media, website, and/or WYFF4. Additionally, the school will send out an email if there is a change in the schedule.
It is not anticipated to, at this time, to affect our area. In the case we have to move to an eLearning Inclement Weather Day, students will complete their work through their Google Classrooms for their teachers. As a rule, 1st and 2nd grade teachers send work home in a paper packet rather than digital. 3rd grade has the option of paper or digital, but 4th-8th grade is digital.
If you have not yet paid the Supply or Tech fees, especially the Tech fee, please do so as soon as possible. Only those students whose Tech fee has been paid can take a Chromebook home at any time. If you are having difficulty paying either of the fees, please let the school know as soon as possible.
As we move slowly toward the winter months and possible inclement weather, please note that any closures or delays posted on television is WYFF4.
Fred Cunningham with WSPA came out the school on Wednesday, September 24, to highlight a story on our very own SRO, Officer Winegard. This story will air on Friday, October 17, at 4:40 am, 5:40 am, 6:40 am, 7:40 am, and during their 4:00 and 10:00 pm newscasts. The story will also be posted on wspa.com early that morning and should be on their WSPA YouTube channel by noon.
Finally, on behalf of the LABCS Board of Directors, I am happy to announce that our school building is now owner-occupied! A big thank you to all those board members involved in getting the school from having a dream of ownership to the reality of ownership!!
A Note from the Assistant Principal
Mrs. Wendye Henderson
As we quickly approach the end of the first quarter (October 8), please review the grading policy in the Student and Parent Handbook for the school. This can be found here.
A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
Supply and Tech Fees
Supply and Tech Fees are now past due. These are 2 separate fees. Please make sure you have paid both fees, or if you would like to set up a payment plan, please reach out to the front office.
Absences
If your child is absent from school, you must provide a doctor's note or a parent note within 3 days of returning to school. You can send in a paper copy to the front office, or you can email: [email protected].
A Note from the Testing Coordinator

Toys
We have students who are bringing in toys to the school. This is creating distractions in classrooms. Please do not allow your child to bring toys.
Below is the policy on toys from the Student and Parent Handbook (p. 38).
Toys/Contraband
All personal toys, radios, music players, handheld audio/game systems, slime, putty, fidgets, Legos, blocks, dolls, stuffed animals, etc., are not allowed at school unless the teacher requests that certain items be brought to school for a specific purpose. If a teacher requests this, a written request will be sent home with the student and through teacher communication. Any of these items, or any items that may injure anyone or cause a disturbance, are not allowed at school and will be taken from the student. Furthermore, disciplinary action will occur for bringing this into the school.
If a parent/guardian wishes to reclaim these toys/items, they may come to the school for them. The school will not be responsible for any item that is damaged or disappears at school.
Gum
Please note that candy is not allowed in the school; as a result, gum is not allowed. Please make sure that your child is not bringing gum into the school. Any students who are caught chewing gum will be asked to spit it out. Students carrying gum who are passing it out to other students will have it confiscated.
