Dyslexia Tidbit
Treating Dyslexia
"There are no medications for dyslexia. But special instruction can help people with dyslexia improve reading, spelling, and writing skills.
A widely used approach is called Orton–Gillingham (OG). It’s highly structured, meaning that reading skills are taught in a direct way and in a logical order. (You might hear it called structured literacy.) Common reading programs for dyslexia are based on it. These include the Barton Reading System and the Wilson Reading System.
OG also involves multisensory instruction. It engages people’s senses and gives them more than one way to connect with what they’re learning.
Proper dyslexia instruction doesn’t just improve skills. Research has shown that it can actually change how the brain functions, creating the pathways needed for reading.
The earlier people get specialized instruction, the better. But it’s never too late to get help to become a more fluent reader. Some private reading specialists work with adults, using approaches that are similar to the ones they use with kids."

A Note from the Principal

We are launching an initiative this year that will involve sending a family survey to our current families at the end of each month. This will enable us to gather feedback and ensure that you, as our stakeholders, have a voice in improving the success of Lakes and Bridges Charter School. Each month, there will be approximately three questions that will vary each time.
Please look for these surveys in your email on or around the 1st of each month. The surveys will close the 7th of each month.
Additionally, LABCS has been designated a Title I Targeted Assistance School. Please look for more information on this.
Finally, we will be offering after-school and weekend tutoring in reading and math again this year. However, the criteria is more targeted than in the past. We will be reaching out to families whose children meet the criteria, based on Fall MAP Scores, to invite them to be tutored (we won't be able to take requests unless the child meets the criteria). Tutoring will be available after-school or on the weekend (this will be a mutually-agreeable time between the parent/guardian and the teacher) in 45-minute sessions at no cost to the parent/guardian. The tutoring can only be used for remediation in reading and math and not for homework, projects, organization, etc., or other subjects.

Birthdays
If you would like to eat lunch with your child on their birthday you are welcome to join them in the lobby during their lunch time. Parents are not permitted to go to the classroom or out to recess.
School Parties (p. 39 of the Student and Parent Handbook)
Teachers may recognize students’ birthdays during homeroom or lunch. Personal party invitations may only be given out at school ONLY if there is an invitation for ALL students in the class. Cupcakes or doughnuts may be served during lunch if a parent/guardian chooses to send them. If a student receives flowers, balloons, etc., at school, the items may be picked up from the office after 2:55 pm.
School Fees
Please remember to pay your student's supply and tech fees. Invoices are uploaded in MySchoolBucks, or you can send in cash or a check. Students will not be allowed to take their Chromebooks home until their tech fee is paid, and the three pages at the end of the Technology Handbook are signed by both the parent/guardian and student. If you are having difficulty paying this fee, please reach out to the front office to discuss a payment plan.
If your child is absent from school you must provide a doctor's note or a parent note within 3 days of them returning to school. You can send in a paper copy to the front office, or you can email: [email protected].

Our PIE groups are getting settled in with routines and powering through small-group lessons. Remember that your child should have Oral Reading homework nightly, and you can keep up with their individualized reading skills from the Weekly Overview sent home on Fridays.

Join Us for the First PTA Meeting of the Year!

We’d love for you to join us for our first PTA Meeting of the year! Come connect with other families, share your ideas, and learn how you can get involved. Everyone is welcome—you don’t have to be a member to attend.
Spirit wear orders will be ready for pick-up before and after the meeting. If you’re unable to attend, they will be sent home with your student the next day. We’ll also have free popcorn and our Uniform & Spirit Wear Swap—bring gently used items to trade or shop “new-to-you” pieces.
Don’t forget—our membership bundle is available through August 31 at midnight. This is your last chance to grab the bundle!

PIE Oral Reading Homework
Your child should have oral reading homework assigned Monday-Thursday nights from their PIE teacher for all grades. Oral reading fluency is critical for reading comprehension, which is why this is the homework assigned in PIE. Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression.Fluent reading builds stamina for reading lengthy or complex texts. Reading fluency serves as a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
How can you help your child with their homework when they are reading aloud to you?
- do not allow them to guess
- if they have difficulty with a word, just give them the word and let them finish the sentence (if you want to, you can circle or underline the word(s) they had difficulty with; it would be best to do this after the child has finished the passage, so they are not self-conscious about "seeing" their errors)
- when they finish the sentence, ask them to re-read the sentence before moving to the next sentence
- if they are making numerous mistakes while reading the passage, chapter, story, etc., please make a note on the oral reading homework to let your child's PIE teacher know
Dress Code Reminders (p. 33-36 of the Student and Parent Handbook)
No running shorts are allowed at any time, including Friday Dress Down Day.
Leggings are not allowed at any time unless they are under a dress, skirt, or skort. This includes Friday Dress Down Day.
No clothing (hats, sweatshirts, shirts, pants, etc. on any day of the week that displays inappropriate material (to be determined by administration) to include anything political, violent, or disparaging words or comments.
Pajamas are not allowed to be worn to school on $1 Dress Down/$1 Hat Fridays. They can only be worn if the Monday Dress Theme is "Pajama Day."
Sweatshirts/Hoodies Reminder
(p. 33 of the Student and Parent Handbook)
A sweatshirt or sweater is acceptable and must be worn on top of the polo shirt. Only sweatshirts/hoodies with LABCS or solid-color sweatshirts/hoodies are allowed. Students wearing a sweatshirt/hoodie that is not solid-colored or LABCS will be required to remove the sweatshirt upon entering the school. Chronic misuse of this will result in the student losing the ability to wear a sweatshirt/hoodie. All approved sweatshirts/hoodies must be clean and free from stains.
Sweatshirts and sweaters cannot:
- be worn inside-out;
- be worn alone; or
- possess any large logo, pattern (to include tie-dye), profanity, political statement, or similar;
- be dirty or stained
- have holes or tears in it.
Monday Dress Theme Days and $1 Dress Down or Jeans Day/$1 Hat Day Friday Dress Codes
(p. 36 of the Student and Parent Handbook)
On these alternative dress days, the following apply
- NO holes or tears in clothing or jeans are allowed unless it is covered by fabric behind the tear(s).
- NO pajama bottoms or flannel bottoms allowed on any day, to include Friday Dress Down Day, unless the dress theme for Monday is specifically stated for Pajama Day.
- NO biking shorts allowed for boys or girls.
- if wearing leggings, a skirt, skort, or dress must be worn over them – no exception.
If students do not adhere to dress code on either of these days, they will be given something from the uniform closet the first time it happens, and a note/email/phone call will be sent/made home. With the 2nd or more offense, the parents could be contacted to bring an extra set of clothes for the child, and the student will not be allowed to participate in the next Friday’s $1 Dress Down day.
Drop-Off/Pick-Up
Please note that there is only one entrance and a different exit for the property. All cars must enter off of Hwy. 93/E. Main Street and exit onto Frank Parrott Road (see map).
It is imperative that you do not use the entrance as an exit as this can be dangerous for those pulling in.
Do not move cones that are in the parking lot; they are there to keep our students, teachers, families, and anyone else on our property safe.
