Dyslexia Tidbit
What is Dyslexia?
"Dyslexia is a lifelong learning disorder that affects reading and spelling. It can also cause problems with writing and math.
Dyslexia is the most common . It’s not clear exactly how many people have it. Expert opinions vary widely, and estimates of the rate of dyslexia in kids range from 5 to 17.5 percent.
Since people don’t outgrow dyslexia, it’s common in adults, too. But “lifelong” doesn’t mean that people have the same difficulties throughout life.
Because it affects reading, some people think dyslexia is a problem with vision. It’s not. Dyslexia is a problem with language processing. Reading starts with being able to recognize and work with the sounds of spoken language. This skill is called phonological awareness.
Dyslexia doesn’t look the same in all people. There are many aspects to reading, and people can struggle with some skills more than others. The difficulties can vary in degree, too.
There’s no cure for dyslexia, but there is help. Specialized reading instruction and supports like accommodations can improve skills and reduce challenges at school and at work."

A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
Don't forget to pack a snack, lunch and water bottle (water bottles cannot have individual straws in them so that if they tip over, water is coming out)!! The school does not provide these.
Tardy: If you arrive after 8:15, you will need to walk your child into the front office.
A Note from the Development Director
Ms. Debbie Vaughn
Charter school funding is different than that of traditional public schools. While we receive limited funding from the state and federal governments, we do NOT share in any county or local tax revenue. This makes a HUGE difference in our operating budget when compared to a traditional public school, and it means that we depend on donations and grants from individuals, businesses, and foundations in order to best serve our student innovators.
Did you know that Lakes and Bridges is a 501(c)(3) organization? Any monetary or in-kind gifts made to our school may be eligible for tax deduction. You can give online ( https://tinyurl.com/donateLABCS), by check, or even through a gift of stock. Questions? Please reach out to Debbie Vaughn ( [email protected]) . Thank you!
A Note from the PTA
Mrs. Shelby Lear, President
Get ready for Meet the Teacher! Here’s what to expect:
- As you enter, grab your Back-to-School boarding pass—the grade with the most completed passes turned in wins an ice cream party!
- On your way out, stop by the PTA table to:
- Turn in your boarding pass
- Shop discontinued spirit wear (great deals on last year’s favorites) and look at this year’s newest designs
- Snap a back-to-school photo with your Dragons
- Join PTA (anyone joining July 1 through the end of Meet the Teacher is entered into our raffles)
- Pre-order Friday pizza lunches (we do around two each month)
- Raffles drawn at 3:05pm on Facebook Live:
- Main raffle with prizes like a $150 Texas de Brazil gift card, Lululemon belt bag, Lakes & Bridges hat, and more
- Student raffle for a special treat box (open to any student who buys a membership July 1 through Meet the Teacher)
- Keep up with us on our Facebook pages for the latest news and updates.
- Can’t make it in person? Visit the PTA Shop to join, shop spirit wear, or order pizza.
See you there—and thanks for supporting our school!
Meet the Teacher
Meet the Teacher is this Tuesday, August 5. Everyone will enter through the Dragon's Den doors that face Frank Parrott Road (the drop-off/pick-up side of the building), which is the opposite side of the building from the main entrance.
Times for Meet the Teacher are:
- Grades 1-5 - 12:00-1:30
- Grades 6-8 - 1:30-3:00
Lunch/Snack Reminders
- Lunches should be healthy.
- No candy, junk food, soft drinks (to include uncaffeinated soft drinks at any time of the day, to include bringing in a soft drink during drop off at school), or caffeinated beverages allowed (caffeinated beverages are not allowed at any time during the day, to include bringing in caffeine during drop off at school in the mornings).
- There will not be an opportunity to heat up lunches, so make sure a lunch does not need to be heated. Students will not have access to microwaves.
- There are no refrigerators available to keep food chilled, so make sure an ice pack is inside each lunch box.
- Please have your child practice being able to open all parts of their lunch independently without teacher help.
- If you send in an item that requires a fork, spoon, or knife, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to send this item(s).
- Snacks are allowed at one designated time specified by the school or homeroom teacher.
- Snacks must be healthy – no candy or junk food allowed.
- All snacks must be finger food items and not require a spoon or fork.
- Students will have no more than 5 minutes to eat their snack, so it should be something quick to eat without a mess.
Dress Code Reminders
When purchasing skorts, skirts, shorts, and jumpers, please note that the length should not be shorter than 2 inches above the knee.
No athletic wear is allowed except for $1 Friday Dress Down Days and/or $1 Hat Days. No running shorts are allowed at any time, including the dress down day.
No clothing (hats, sweatshirts, shirts, pants, etc. on any day of the week, including Monday Dress Theme Days or Friday Dress Down Days, Field Days, other non-dress code days) that displays inappropriate material (to be determined by administration) to include anything political, violent, or disparaging words or comments.
Students are allowed to wear any solid color bottoms (skirt, skort, pants, shorts) this year. There was a typo in the handbook that indicated only pants could be any color.
Drop-Off/Pick-Up
Please note that there is only one entrance and a different exit for the property. All cars must enter off of Hwy. 93/E. Main Street and exit onto Frank Parrott Road (see map). It is imperative that you do not use the entrance as an exit as this can be dangerous for those pulling in. Do not move cones that are in the parking lot; they are there to keep our students, teachers, families, and anyone else on our property safe.
Students can be dropped off between 7:45-8:15 by following the traffic pattern to the far side of the building. Someone will be out there around 7:45 to allow students into the building. Please do not let your child out of the car without a faculty/staff member out there.
Car tags will be handed out at Meet the Teacher so that you can display this in the dash to allow for efficiency in calling out names of students to a pick-up place.
If you need to drop off before 7:45, there is a fee of $5/day/child to drop off between 7:15-7:45. You will need to walk your child to the main entrance doors (where the tan awning is). Do not leave without the early-stay teacher being present in the school's lobby.
Dismissal begins just prior to 3:00. Expect delays the first week of school as we learn the cars and the students. If your car is stuck on the road ttrying to turn right into the parking lot, please put your flashers on so other cars can see you, or you can drive past the school, do a U-turn, and get into the turning lane to turn left.
It is important that there aren't large gaps between cars so that we can get as many cars on the property as possible. The two lanes zip merge into one lane, so please be respectful and alternate the merge without cutting someone off.
Around 3:15, students who are still left in the Dragon's Den are moved to the front lobby where they will be picked up. If you go to the pick-up area and no one is outside, please drive around the building to the main entrance to pick-up your child. Students will need to get picked up by 3:30 to avoid a charge. Any student picked up between 3:30-4:00 will incur a charge of $5/day/child. All students must be picked up no later than 4:00.
