Dyslexia Tidbit
Symptoms of Dyslexia
"Signs of dyslexia vary from person to person and can change over time. They’re often different in kids than in adults. If you have dyslexia, your symptoms as an adult may not look like the symptoms you had as a child. But in general, people with dyslexia have trouble with:
-
Decoding (sounding out words)
-
Encoding (spelling words)
-
Fluency (reading at a good pace and without mistakes)
Symptoms in kids
A key sign of dyslexia in kids is trouble with sounding out words and knowing how to blend sounds. But dyslexia symptoms can appear as early as preschool — before kids are learning to read. If your child has dyslexia, you may notice symptoms such as:
-
Mispronouncing words
-
Struggling to learn nursery rhymes or song lyrics that rhyme
-
Mixing up letters that look similar
-
Not being interested in learning about letters and sounds
Signs in adults
Some signs of dyslexia in adults are related to reading skills. Others are the result of reading challenges. These signs might involve emotions or behavior.
For example, you may get anxious when you read or are asked to read out loud. This can happen even after you’re able to read quickly and without many mistakes.
Other signs include:
-
Not understanding what you’ve read
-
Making a lot of mistakes when reading
-
Quickly forgetting names of people and places
-
Feeling tired after reading
-
Avoiding reading
-
Difficulty with spelling and writing"

A Note from the Development Director
Ms. Debbie Vaughn
Fore! Mark your calendar for Tee Up for Dyslexia, Lakes and Bridges' 5th annual fundraising golf tournament, on Monday, November 10th at the beautiful Southern Oaks Golf Club. Team registration and sponsorship opportunities are available by clicking here.
Did you know that you can give a monthly gift to Lakes & Bridges? We are so grateful to those who have set up regular online donations to our school. Monthly gifts help us plan and budget for "extras" like special supplies and programs, student clubs, and more. To set up a recurring gift, simply click here and select your desired donation frequency. Whether it's $20 or $200 (or $2,000!), your regular donations allow us to go beyond the basics and be the best we can be for our brilliant student innovators. Thank you for believing in our mission to build strong bridges between dyslexia and success!
I can't wait to answer any questions you might have! Contact me at [email protected].

Lunch Reminders
- Lunches should be healthy.
- No candy, junk food, soft drinks (to include uncaffeinated soft drinks at any time of the day, to include bringing in a soft drink during drop off at school), or caffeinated beverages allowed (caffeinated beverages are not allowed at any time during the day, to include bringing in caffeine during drop off at school in the mornings).
- There will not be an opportunity to heat up lunches, so make sure a lunch does not need to be heated. Students will not have access to microwaves.
- There are no refrigerators available to keep food chilled, so make sure an ice pack is inside each lunch box.
Gum
No gum is allowed at any time while at school. Please make sure your child does not bring this to school.
Dress Code Reminders
No running shorts are allowed at any time, including the dress down day.
No clothing (hats, sweatshirts, shirts, pants, etc. on any day of the week, including Monday Dress Theme Days or Friday Dress Down Days, Field Days, other non-dress code days) that displays inappropriate material (to be determined by administration) to include anything political, violent, or disparaging words or comments.
Students are allowed to wear any solid color bottoms (skirt, skort, pants, shorts) this year. There was a typo in the handbook that indicated only pants could be any color.
Pajamas are not allowed to be worn to school on $1 Dress Down/$1 Hat Fridays. They can only be worn if the Monday Dress Theme is "Pajama Day."
Sweatshirts/Hoodies Reminder
Only solid-colored sweatshirts/hoodies are allowed on Monday-Thursdays. There can be no wording or graphics on the front, back, or sleeves. A solid-colored polo-style shirt or LABCS t-shirt is required under the sweatshirt/hoodie.
Drop-Off/Pick-Up
Please note that there is only one entrance and a different exit for the property. All cars must enter off of Hwy. 93/E. Main Street and exit onto Frank Parrott Road (see map).
It is imperative that you do not use the entrance as an exit as this can be dangerous for those pulling in.
Do not move cones that are in the parking lot; they are there to keep our students, teachers, families, and anyone else on our property safe.
