Dyslexia Tidbit
The International Dyslexia Association - Structured Literacy
"Structured literacy (SL) teaching is the most effective approach for students who experience unusual difficulty learning to read and spell printed words. The term refers to both the content and methods or principles of instruction. It means the same kind of instruction as the terms multisensory structured language education and structured language and literacy.
Structured literacy teaching stands in contrast with approaches that are popular in many schools but that do not teach oral and written language skills in an explicit, systematic manner. Evidence is strong that the majority of students learn to read better with structured teaching of basic language skills, and that the components and methods of Structured Literacy are critical for students with reading disabilities including dyslexia."

Awards Assemblies and 8th Grade Graduation
Please see the schedule below for the assemblies and graduation on Friday, May 23. Due to space limitations in the Dragon's Den, we only have room for immediate family for all of these events (parents or guardians and siblings).
- 8:30-9:00 - Grades 1-3
- 9:10-9:50 - Grades 4-5
- 10:00-10:30 - Grades 6-8
- 10:45-12:00 - 8th Grade Graduation
Lunches
Please double-check each morning that your child has their lunch as they leave the house and then again before they exit the car. We keep a limited supply for emergencies, but we have had more requests lately due to students leaving their lunches at home or in the car.
Please remember to pack silverware for your child's lunch. Please make sure your child has a water bottle and a snack at school.
Dress Code
Please make sure your child is in the correct dress code as well (this is in the Student and Parent Handbook) before leaving the house. We have students who are arriving at school out of dress code. Students out of dress code will be required to visit the Uniform Closet and might be unable to participate in Dress Down Friday that week.
NO leggings, pajamas, or athletic/biker/running shorts are allowed on any day, including Friday Dress Down Days.
Lost and Found
We have a HUGE Lost and Found collection. Please feel free to stop by the school and see if any of the items belong to your student. All items not claimed by Friday, May 23, will be donated to the Dream Center.
State Testing Dates
Below are the dates for the remainder of state testing. These dates have been on our website and can be found here as well as below. Please do not schedule appointments during the days your child is taking their test. Also, make sure your child is at school by 8:15 each morning. It is important that students get to bed at a reasonable time the night before and eat a good breakfast. You can access our State Testing Policies and Procedures on our website by clicking here.
- May 13 - Grades 3-5 (Writing)
- May 14 - Grades 6-8 (Writing)
- May 15 - Grades 3-5 (Math)
- May 16 - Grades 6-8 (Math)
- May 20 - Grades 4 and 6 (Science)
A Note from the School Nurse
I have seen an increase in falls and injuries with students running in Crocs at recess. While I understand the comfort and ease of putting on Crocs in the morning, as well as their popularity, we encourage students to wear shoes that offer support and stability when running and playing. If they want to wear Crocs to school, please make sure they have tennis shoes to change into for recess. Tennis shoes are required for PE.
A Note from the PTA
We just wanted to thank our sponsors who helped with teacher appreciation this week!
Thank you to the Wells' family for donating breakfast on Monday, Carolina Risk Management for the yummy Mexican on Tuesday, the parents of LABCS for restocking the teacher's lounge for the rest of the year, Newspring Powdersville for the Dunkin' Donuts on Thursday, and Five Point Church for the Two Bros lunch on Friday! Thank you also to Papa Bear's car wash for gifting every teacher a free car wash, and we were also able to purchase a small gift card for every teacher!
We are still looking for PTA board members for next year. If you are interested, please reach out to Mrs. Courtney Evert at [email protected]
Federal Programs Survey
Thank you to those who attended the virtual meeting this morning, Saturday, May 10. Please fill out this survey by Monday evening, May 12, to help us better narrow down areas of focus for not only Title II programs but all other federal programs. To access the survey, click here.
Summer Reading Projects
Returning students in rising grades 6-8 are required to complete a Summer Reading Project. These are due Friday, August 8, 2025, when we return to school. These will count as a major test grade in ELA. This information is on our website and can be accessed here.
Summer Enrichment Camps
If you are interested in your returning rising 3rd-8th grade student participating in the Summer Math and/or ELA Enrichment Camps, please register by May 9 using this link. For more information on the camp, click here. These camps are different from the 3rd grade Summer Reading Camp under Read to Succeed.
This is only available to LABCS students returning for the 2025-2026 school year.
Field Day Volunteers Needed
If you are interested in volunteering with Field Day, please reach out to Coach Chris ( [email protected]). The success of our annual Field Days is dependent upon volunteers. Field Day will be held the morning of Thursday, May 22 from 9:00-11:45.
State Testing Technology Policy
At the April 7, 2025, Board Meeting, the LABCS Board of Directors approved an additional technology policy for state testing.
LABCS Board Approved SC State Testing Technology Policy for SCReady and SCPass
The following policy is in effect for SC state testing.
Students:
- If a phone or smart watch is not turned in during morning homeroom (this is school policy), it is an automatic suspension.
- If cheating occurs with a phone or smart watch, it is an automatic 10-day suspension and could result in the recommendation for possible expulsion.
