Dyslexia Tidbit
How to Help Your Dyslexic Child with Oral Reading at Home
Supporting your child’s reading at home can make a big difference! With a few simple, consistent strategies, you can help build both skills and confidence.
Read With Your Child: - Take turns reading - Read together, then let your child try - Model smooth, expressive reading
Encourage Sounding Out Words: - Decode instead of guess - Break words into parts (bas-ket, sun-set) - Blend sounds together
Use Repeated Reading: - Reread short passages 2–4 times - Builds accuracy, fluency, and confidence
Keep Practice Short & Positive: - 10–15 minutes daily - Focus on one small goal - Praise effort
Add Audio Support: - Listen and follow along with text - Builds vocabulary and confidence
Practice High-Frequency Words: - Review a few daily (the, said, was) - Use flashcards or games
Make It Multi-Sensory: - Trace words - Tap sounds - Say sounds while writing
Build Confidence First: - Encourage effort - Avoid over-correcting - Let your child choose books
Simple Daily Routine: - 3 min sight words - 5 min read together - 5 min reread - 2 min celebrate

A Note from the Principal
Ms. Heidi Bishop
Well, we made it to the final parts of our Spring Break! This is a well-deserved time of rest for everyone in our LABCS community - students, faculty/staff, and families.
As head toward the end of the 2025-2026 school year, this has been a year of many firsts:
- First time receiving an Excellent Rating on our Middle School SC Report Card (we are the first AEC School to receive this recognition in SC);
- First time being recognized by the SCDE as a Silver High Performing School on the SC Report Cards.
- First time receiving the 2026 SC Charter School Leader of the Year;
- First time our PTA has received an award from the SCPTA for SCPTA Membership Growth;
- First time graduating students who joined us in 1st grade and have attended all eight years of the school's existence;
- First time having our first 8th grade graduating class graduating high school this year; and
- First time becoming "homeowners" by purchasing the building this year.
"Team Work Makes the Dream Work!"
We look forward to a strong end of the school year!!
A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
School Climate Surveys due April 17, 2026
The South Carolina Department of Education partners with the Education Oversight Committee to deliver a parent survey. The responses to this survey help school and district leaders understand how parents feel about the school. A link to this survey is being sent to the parents or guardians of every student in South Carolina. If you have multiple children, you might get several links. We are only asking you to complete one survey for each school your children attend. You are permitted to complete one survey for each of your children if you want, but only one survey for each school is needed.
You received a letter last week with a QR code specific for your student. Please complete the survey by April 17th. If you need another copy of the QR code reach out to Kelly Disbrow at [email protected].
Absences
If your child is absent from school, you must provide a doctor's note or a parent note within 3 days of returning to school. You can send in a paper copy to the front office or email it to [email protected].

When completing this form for that opportunity, please select Pickens County as the school district your child is participating in.
A Note from the Talent Show Committee
Mrs. Stephanie Phifer, Mr. Andrew Elkins, Mrs. Endia Jones
We are excited to host our 8th Annual Talent Show on Friday, May 15, 2026. Sign-Up forms will be sent home with students after Spring Break.
A Note from the Gala Committee
Mrs. Debbie Vaughn
THANK YOU for making our 8th annual fundraising gala, MURDER on the BOOKS, a success! We are still reconciling all of the numbers, but it looks like we brought in roughly $70,000 on Saturday evening-- and that doesn't include sponsorships and ticket sales. Proceeds from the evening will help fund projects for key improvements to our campus: making more green spaces, outdoor learning spaces, and playground zones; and repaving our parking areas.
Couldm't make it to the event but still want to contribute? By all means, do! You can make a tax-deductible donation by cash, check, or online.
A Note from the PTA
Mrs. Gwinn O'Shields, President
