Dyslexia Tidbit
Why is Sleep and Breakfast Important for Students with Standardized Testing?
Adequate sleep and a nutritious breakfast are critical for standardized testing because they directly enhance cognitive functions like memory, attention, and mental stamina. Sleep ensures brain alertness and emotional regulation, while breakfast provides the essential glucose needed for concentration and focus.
Why Sleep is Important for Testing
- Memory Consolidation: Sleep helps fix information in the brain, allowing students to recall better information learned for the test.
- Cognitive Function: A well-rested brain operates at a higher level, enabling students to process complex questions more quickly.
- Better Focus: Inconsistent sleep or sleep deprivation hurts performance; consistent, high-quality sleep has been shown to account for roughly 25% of the variance in academic performance.
Why Breakfast is Important for Testing
- Improved Concentration: Breakfast provides essential fuel, allowing for better focus and alertness.
- Reduced Cognitive Load: A hungry student is more distracted, while a well-fed student is better able to solve problems and manage the mental demands of a test.

A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
Absences
If your child is absent from school, you must provide a doctor's note or a parent note within 3 days of returning to school. You can send in a paper copy to the front office or email it to [email protected].
A Note from the School Nurse
Nurse Dava House
Students are not allowed to carry ANY medication (prescription or over-the-counter) on their person without physician permission, parent/guardian permission, and school permission to self-administer and self-monitor (SC Law S144). The ONLY medications that can be in a student’s possession (with proper authorization) are for asthma, diabetes, and severe allergic reactions. Other than those medications, all medications will be maintained in the health room. Medications that are state-approved for self-administering/monitoring are inhalers, insulin, and Epi-Pens for 4th graders and up. These medications must be authorized by the physician and the school administration/ nurse before being sent with the student.
Please help us keep all students safe by following the medication policy found in the handbook and copied below. If you have any questions, please reach out to Nurse Dava at [email protected] or 864-671-6265.
