Dyslexia Tidbit
Women's History Month
In honor of Women's History Month, each week, we will highlight women who have publicly shared that they are dyslexic or had significant reading difficulties, often crediting those experiences with shaping their success.
Erin Brockovich
Labelled in school: “The Girl Least Likely to Succeed”, Erin Brockovich is dyslexic and struggled in early education, but thanks to some inspiring teaching experiences went on to become an internationally renowned lawyer.
She helped win the largest class-action lawsuit in US history, worth $333 million, and had to read through thousands of pages of medical records and legal briefs that she often found difficult get through. Brockovich maintains that it’s actually dyslexia that helped work as a lawyer and she remains a powerful advocate for people with literacy differences in the workplace and in education.
Agatha Christie
She was the world’s #1 mystery writer, the creator of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, and by some people’s reckoning, the bestselling author of all time!
Christie herself described herself as struggling to read and write from an early age with: “writing and spelling being extremely difficult,” and wasn’t expected to learn to read properly until she was around eight years old (although, due to extraordinary determination, managed to teach herself at around the age of five).
Agatha Christie is a powerful inspiration to many authors all over the globe and exemplifies the idea that dyslexia or literacy difficulties make no difference to someone’s natural storytelling ability.
Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE
Diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of eight, Dr. Maggie is a British space scientist and educator well-known for raising the profile of physics in the public eye. She won the William Thompson, Lord Kelvin medal from the Institute of Physics in 2020 for her public engagement work, and is well-known for visiting schools as an advocate for women and BAME people getting into the sciences. She’s presented a number of TV programmes as well as leading research on the Aeolus Satellite, a key part of monitoring climate change, too!
She was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her tireless work in the field of science education.

A Note from the Principal
Ms. Heidi Bishop
Just a few reminders about dress code and food.
Dress Code Reminders
Please revisit the following dress code policies with your children (pp. 33-36 from the Student and Parent Handbook):
Here are the main points to remember:
- ONLY solid-colored hoodies and sweatshirts except on Fridays
- NO sweatpants allowed except for Friday Dress Down Days
- NO leggings on any day unless under a skirt, skort, or dress
- NO biking shorts or running shorts are to be worn on any day, to include Friday Dress Down Days
Snacks, Water, Breakfast, Lunch, and Soft Drinks Please make sure you send in snacks, lunch, and a water bottle with your child every day. If a student forgets a water bottle, they will need to use the water fountains.
At no time are soft drinks (even non-caffeinated soft drinks) or caffeinated drinks allowed. Students will be asked to pour them out. Only water bottles are allowed in the building - no fast food drink cups will be allowed (even if they only have water in them) since the lids can come off easily or spill if tipped.
Utensils
Please send in utensils (forks, spoons, etc.) in your child's lunch.
A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
School Climate Surveys due April 17, 2026
The South Carolina Department of Education partners with the Education Oversight Committee to deliver a parent survey. The responses to this survey help school and district leaders understand how parents feel about the school. A link to this survey is being sent to the parents or guardians of every student in South Carolina. If you have multiple children, you might get several links. We are only asking you to complete one survey for each school your children attend. You are permitted to complete one survey for each of your children if you want, but only one survey for each school is needed.
You will receive a letter this week with a QR code specific for your student. Please complete the survey by April 17th.
Absences
If your child is absent from school, you must provide a doctor's note or a parent note within 3 days of returning to school. You can send in a paper copy to the front office or email it to [email protected].
