Black History Month
This Week's Highlights
Willard Wigan, MBE (born June 1957) is a British sculptor from Ashmore Park Estate, Wednesfield, England, the son of Jamaican immigrants, who makes micro miniature sculptures. His sculptures are typically placed in the eye of a needle or on the head of a pin. A single sculpture can be as small as 0.005 mm (0.0002 in).
As a child with dyslexia, which was not diagnosed until adulthood, Willard Wigan was ridiculed in class by his primary school teachers for not learning to read. Wigan attributes his early drive in sculpting, which began at the age of five, to his need to escape from the derision of teachers and classmates. He wanted to show the world that nothing did not exist, deducing that if people were unable to view his work, then they would not be in any position to criticise it. Wigan has since aimed to make even smaller artworks, visible only with a microscope.
In July 2007 he was made an MBE.
Kobe Bryant Kobe Bean Bryant (August 23, 1978 – January 26, 2020) was an American professional basketball player. A shooting guard, he spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Widely regarded as one of the sport's greatest and most influential players of all time, Bryant won five NBA championships and was an 18-time All-Star, 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and a two-time NBA Finals MVP. He ranks fourth in league all-time regular season and postseason scoring. Bryant was posthumously voted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 and named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
Hank Aaron Henry Louis Aaron (February 5, 1934 – January 22, 2021), nicknamed "Hammer" or "Hammerin' Hank", was an American professional baseball right fielder who played 23 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), from 1954 through 1976. Considered one of the greatest baseball players in history, he spent 21 seasons with the Milwaukee / Atlanta Braves in the National League (NL) and two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League (AL). At the time of his retirement, Aaron held most of the game's key career power-hitting records. He broke the long-standing MLB record for career home runs held by Babe Ruth and remained the career leader for 33 years, until Barry Bonds surpassed his famous total of 755 in 2007. He hit 24 or more home runs every year from 1955 through 1973 and is one of only two players to hit 30 or more home runs in a season at least fifteen times.

Dress Code Reminders
Only solid-color or LABCS sweatshirts or hoodies are allowed. Any others must be taken off when entering the building. They can be worn outside for recess or PE.
When wearing a solid-color or LABCS sweatshirt or hoodie, a solid-color polo-style shirt must be worn underneath.
No Huggle Hoodies or similar oversized "blanket" hoodies are allowed in the building unless it is a Pajama Day Dress Theme.
No leggings, athletic or non-athletic, are allowed for anyone on any day unless under a dress or skirt.
At no time during the week, Monday-Thursday, are sweatpants or athletic shorts allowed.
Students who are out of dress code will be taken to the uniform closet to get appropriate clothing and could jeopardize their ability to participate in Friday $1 Dress Down Days.
Only with a Dress Down pass is a student allowed to be out of dress code on a Monday-Thursday. They can use the Dress Down pass on Friday instead of paying the $1. If they want to wear a hat on Fridays, they will still need to pay $1 since Dress Down passes do not include hats.
For further clarification, please refer to the Student and Parent Handbook given at the beginning of the year or when your child started during the school year. You can also access it on our website by clicking here.
Your cooperation in ensuring your child leaves the house in the appropriate dress code is greatly appreciated.

Electronic Devices Reminders
On January 7, 2025, the new board-approved school-wide cellphone ban, which includes Smart Watches, went into effect. The policy will ban phones, smart watches, tablets and gaming devices during the school day. They would need to be powered off and put away. Exceptions will be allowed for students with IEPs and medical plans if the device is needed for medical or educational purpose
School hours are defined as beginning with the student’s arrival on campus as they exit their parent’s/guardian’s/carpool’s car during morning car line and ending when the student has entered their parent’s/guardian’s/carpool’s car to leave for the day.
Students must adhere to the school’s established communication devices/cell phones/smart watches protocol as directed. Failure to adhere to the policy established will result in the following consequences:
- 1st offense – confiscation for the remainder of the school day (no exceptions)
- 2nd offense – the device is, devices are, not allowed to be at school for two weeks (no exceptions)
- 3rd offense – the device is, devices are, not allowed to be at school for the remainder of the school year (no exceptions)
What is Chronic Absenteeism?
Chronically absent students are defined as having missed 10% of the total days within a school year. Research shows that students with a history of chronic absenteeism face a serious risk of falling behind in school, thus making it more difficult for them to succeed in the classroom.
- All types of absences contribute to chronic absenteeism:
- Excused (Lawful) Absences
- Unexcused Absences
- Suspensions
- A student is absent if he or she is not physically on school grounds and is not participating in instruction or instruction-related activities at an approved off-grounds location for the school day.
Lawful Absences
Lawful absences include but are not limited to:
- (1) absences caused by a student’s own illness and whose attendance in school would endanger his or her health or the health of others,
- (2) absences due to an illness or death in the student’s immediate family,
- (3) absences due to a recognized religious holiday of the student’s faith, and
- (4) absences due to activities that are approved in advance by the principal.
