Dyslexia Tidbit
Ways Parents Can Help Their Dyslexic Children at Home
Build a Supportive Home Environment
- Be patient and positive. Celebrate effort, not just results.
- Encourage strengths. Dyslexic children often excel in creativity, problem-solving, or verbal reasoning.
- Create routines. Structure helps them manage reading and homework with less stress.
Support Reading at Home
- Read aloud together. Take turns reading, or let them follow along as you read.
- Use audiobooks. Listening while following along in print builds fluency and vocabulary.
- Choose interest-based books. Motivation grows when the topic excites them.
- Revisit favorite books. Repetition boosts confidence and comprehension.
Build Confidence and Emotional Strength
- Highlight successes. Praise persistence and creativity.
- Share stories of successful dyslexics. This helps them see that dyslexia doesn’t define their potential.
- Teach self-advocacy. Help your child understand their learning style and how to ask for what they need.

We apologize in advance to anyone we accidentally left off.

YMCA Mentor Program and Collaboration with LABCS
We are excited to announce a partnership with the YMCA and their Mentor program. This wonderful program matches students (mentees) with adults (mentors) in the community. The mentors meet weekly with the mentee at the school. This program provides students with extra support and a positive relationship, so they can achieve their potential!
If you are interested in having your child be a part of the Y Mentor program, please email [email protected]. If you are interested in becoming a Y Mentor, you can fill out the application online.

A Note from the Principal Ms. Heidi Bishop
As you have heard by now, the school received an Excellent rating (up from Average) on our SC School Report Card for our middle school. Our elementary school also improved their grade from Unsatisfactory to Below Average, missing Average by three points.
Our middle school improved by 20 points from 2023-2024 to 2024-2025, and our elementary school improved by 7 points from 2023-2024 to 2024-2025. We are proud of the growth from both parts of the school. The teachers and the students have worked hard for this growth.
Our middle school's report grade wouldn't be possible without the foundation our elementary school teachers laid.
We will look to celebrate these accomplishments in the coming weeks.
A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
Headphones/Ear Buds
All students must have earbuds or headphones in class every day. The school does not provide these.
Absences
If your child is absent from school, you must provide a doctor's note or a parent note within 3 days of returning to school. You can send in a paper copy to the front office, or you can email: [email protected].
Lost and Found
We have a large collection of items in our Lost and Found cabinet - clothes, water bottles, lunch boxes, etc. If your child is missing any items, please swing by the school to check the cabinet. All items unclaimed by December 19, the last day before Holiday Break begins, will be donated to the Dream Center.
