Dyslexia Tidbit
Characteristics of Dyslexia in Elementary School-Age Children
Reading Skills
- Slow, effortful reading
- Trouble sounding out unfamiliar words
- Difficulty recognizing common sight words
- Avoids reading aloud or becomes anxious when asked
Phonological Awareness Challenges
- Difficulty breaking words into sounds (e.g., cat → /c/ /a/ /t/)
- Trouble identifying beginning, middle, and ending sounds
- Confusing similar-sounding words
Spelling and Writing Difficulties
- Frequent spelling errors, especially with vowel sounds
- Inconsistent spelling of the same word
- Poor handwriting or difficulty organizing thoughts on paper
- Reversals with letters or numbers (common early on but may persist longer for dyslexic learners)
Memory and Sequencing Challenges
- Trouble remembering multi-step directions
- Difficulty recalling letter names and sounds
- Struggles with sequencing (days of the week, alphabet, story events)
Language-Related Challenges
- Difficulty finding the right words when speaking
- Mispronouncing longer or unfamiliar words
- Limited vocabulary growth compared to peers
- Difficulty retelling stories in order
Reading Comprehension Challenges
- Understands stories much better when they are read aloud
- Loses place easily when reading
- Struggles to answer comprehension questions because decoding takes so much effort
School Performance Indicators
- difficulty with tasks requiring hand coordination (buttoning, using scissors, etc.)
- trouble remembering routines or multi-step sequences
Family History
- a strong indicator
- dyslexia often runs in families; a parent of sibling with dyslexia increases the likelihood of dyslexia
Strengths Often Seen in Dyslexic Learners
It's important to recognize that dyslexic children often show:
- Creative problem-solving
- Big-picture thinking
- Strong reasoning and imagination
- Strengths in oral language and hands-on activities

A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
Headphones/Ear Buds
All students must have earbuds or headphones in class every day. The school does not provide these.
Absences
If your child is absent from school, you must provide a doctor's note or a parent note within 3 days of returning to school. You can send in a paper copy to the front office, or you can email: [email protected].
Lost and Found
We have a large collection of items in our Lost and Found cabinet - clothes, water bottles, lunch boxes, etc. If your child is missing any items, please swing by the school to check the cabinet. All items unclaimed by December 19, the last day before Holiday Break begins, will be donated to the Dream Center.
