Dyslexia Tidbit
Characteristics of Dyslexia in Pre-School Children
Early signs of dyslexia often appear before children begin formal reading. These characteristics reflect language, memory, and phonological awareness development.
Speech and Language Delays
- late to start talking (after age 2-3)
- difficulty learning new words
- trouble forming complete sentences compared to peers
- mispronouncing words or persistent "baby talk"
Difficulty with Sounds and Rhyming
- has trouble recognizing or generating rhyming words (cat/hat)
- difficulty breaking words into parts (clapping syllables)
- struggles to match beginning sounds ("Which word starts like "sun"?)
Listening and Memory Challenges
- difficulty following multi-step directions
- trouble remembering
- songs
- nursery rhymes
- names of colors, shapes, or days of the week
Small Vocabulary Growth
- uses fewer words than peers
- difficulty retrieving the correct work ("You know...the thing...that thing!")
Naming Difficulties
- slow to name familiar objects, letters, or colors, even when they know them
- long pauses or substitutions ("that animal" instead of "dog"
Challenges with Early Literacy Skills
- difficulty recognizing letters of the alphabet
- confusion between letters that look similar (b/d/p/g/q; n/u; etc.)
- lack of interest in books or avoids looking at print
- difficult learning to write or draw basic shapes
Motor Skill or Sequencing Difficulties
- difficulty with tasks requiring hand coordination (buttoning, using scissors, etc.)
- trouble remembering routines or multi-step sequences
Family History
- a strong indicator
- dyslexia often runs in families; a parent of sibling with dyslexia increases the likelihood of dyslexia
Important Reminder
These signs do not diagnose dyslexia on their own. Many preschoolers show one or two of these characteristics as part of typical development. However, a cluster of these difficulties, especially with a family history, may signal a need for early support.

YMCA Mentor Program and Collaboration with LABCS
We are excited to announce a partnership with the YMCA and their Mentor program. This wonderful program matches students (mentees) with adults (mentors) in the community. The mentors meet weekly with the mentee at the school. This program provides students with extra support and a positive relationship, so they can achieve their potential!
If you are interested in having your child be a part of the Y Mentor program, please email [email protected]. If you are interested in becoming a Y Mentor, you can fill out the application online.

A Note from the Principal Ms. Heidi Bishop
Thank you to those parents/guardians who attended the Title I Virtual Meeting on Tuesday, November 11. We went over a lot of information about this new designation. As a result, we have added a new section under the " Students/Parents" section called " Title I" (it is the first section in the drop-down). Everything pertaining to Title I will be in that section, although it might be duplicated in other sections of the website. The presentation from Tuesday night can also be found in this section.
There will be two forms coming home next week in which we need all families to sign. One is a Home-School Compact, and the other is a Parent and Family Engagement Policy. The Home-School Compact will require both a parent/guardian signature and student signature. If you have more than one child in the school, you will sign each sheet. The Parent and Family Engagement Policy was adopted by those who attended the virual meeting on Tuesday and will require just a parent/guardian signature.
If you have access to a printer and want to print and sign the two forms by accessing the links above, feel free to do so and return to school on Monday. Otherwise, these will come home on Monday, November 17. They will need to be returned no later than Friday, November 21.
