Lakes & Bridges Charter School Hires Founding Principal
Heidi High Bishop, a dyslexia curriculum expert and experienced administrator, to head school’s opening
Lakes and Bridges Charter School, a new school formed to teach children with dyslexia and related reading challenges, has hired Heidi High Bishop as its founding principal. Ms. Bishop will lead the school in decisions regarding facilities, curriculum, budget and more as it works toward opening for students in August 2018.
“The charter committee completed an extensive job search and interview process to find the perfect person to lead this school,” remarked the committee’s chair, Nancy L. Linvill. “Heidi stood out for her robust experience and passion for teaching all children to read. We’re thrilled to have her expertise and energy on board as we open an exceptional school.”
Heidi High Bishop holds a B.A. in education from Queens University of Charlotte (formerly Queens College). She has worked with dyslexic students for 31 years in three different private schools. Most recently, she has been on staff at Camperdown Academy in Greenville, S.C., an Orton-Gillingham (OG) accredited school for children with dyslexia, where she taught and performed various administrative duties for 26 years. Ms. Bishop was trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach in 1991, began helping out with Camperdown’s OG Teacher Training Program in 1998, and then became the program’s director in 2001, where she has overseen the program until the summer of 2017. At Camperdown Academy, she has held various leadership roles, including Interim Head of School and Acting Head of School, Assistant Head of School, Camp Co-Founder, and Head of Education.
Ms. Bishop received her Fellow from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) in September of 2001. This is the highest level of credentialing by the Academy. Ms. Bishop has trained teachers on OG throughout the Upstate of South Carolina, as well as conducted school-wide and district-wide trainings in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and California.
Ms. Bishop received her Certified Dyslexia Therapist certificate by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) in December 2016. She completed the South Carolina Independent School Association’s (SCISA) Heads’ Institute in July 2007, was appointed to the S.C. Dyslexia Task Force for the 2012 calendar year, was appointed to the Read to Succeed (Act 284) Advisory Group during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years, was president of the International Dyslexia Association-South Carolina Branch (IDA-SC) from 2011-2016, served on Understood.org’s expert panel for their “1 in 5” campaign in Columbia in February 2016, has served on expert panels in S.C. and N.C. for Harvey Hubbell V’s screening of the documentary “Dislecksia: The Movie,” and currently serves on the Information and Outreach Committee of the AOGPE. She has been involved in dyslexia legislation in the state of S.C. by answering questions legislators have regarding dyslexia and testifying as necessary. In August 2011, her book review on Alberto Manguel’s “A Reader on Reading” was published by Research Publishing Quarterly.
Ms. Bishop and her husband, Tim, have been married for almost 25 years and live in Simpsonville, S.C. They have two children: Ashlyn, a student at Clemson University majoring in history, and William, a student at Mauldin High School.
Ms. Bishop’s role during the founding year of Lakes and Bridges Charter School will be to work with the charter committee to select a school location, implement the curriculum, hire staff, lead community outreach and student recruitment efforts, assist in fundraising, manage the budget, and serve as the school’s liaison to the community, district and state. In July 2018, she will transition to a more traditional principal role as she leads the school in its first year, which begins August 2018.
